PORTFOLIO
The Compass movement entails a gear along a track that allows the opening and closing mechanism to stay in position. The use of the track does not always need to intersect the two opening members however in this example this was used.

Pulley Movement usually consists of a load being pulled from on side that allows the other side to get pulled. This is a great example of a mechanism to introduce lifting or opening of members.

The Bottle opener is a very interesting house held item. The movement is simply a set of gears parallel to each other which lay on each side of a track. The bottom of the track pierces the cork of a bottle and the gears allow movement upward.

FINAL DESIGN 3-D

3 X 3 COMBINATION TABLE
In an attempt to understand a combination between the static bridge prototypes and the movement analogies we provide a table explaining what the benefit and what the fall back of each design paired with the static prototypes.

BRIDGE PROTOTYPES
BRIDGE INSPIRATION
Sydney Harbour Bridge
The Arch style of bridging is one of the most popular designs. The basic principle of an arch bridge is its curved design, Because of the unique shape of its design it conveys the load along the curve rather than pushing the load forces straight down.

BRIDGE INSPIRATION 2
Millau Bridge
Another popular bridge design would be the Cable stay design. This design implores tension cords or (cables) which help to deal with the absorbing of compressional forces against the bridge. They are also popular due to the fact they require less steel and are faster to build.

BRIDGE INSPIRATION 3
Pratt Truss Bridge
Lastly we have another popular bridge design style; Truss. The truss bridges contains the truss system of connecting elements to form triangular units. These triangular units allow for the transference of loads from a single point to a much wider area.

FORM & FUNCTION
This project examines the relationship of form and function in architectural design. It encourages the awareness of truth, whatever position the designer takes, and promotes the arbitrary aesthetic of “functional” beauty. The emphasis of this project is to develop a pedestrian bridge that can open to allow the passage of a boat (30'x40'). Opening mechanism must be determined by incorporating house held items that demonstrate movement. The addition of this mechanism must transform the characteristics of the bridge prototype. Final design should include visible change to the structure. My design incorporates the use of pulley and gear system along with a standard arch bridge.
